Mercia Real Estate have been granted planning permission to convert HSBC's former Birmingham office into a 123-room hotel and 266-bed purpose-built student accommodation.

MRE has received the go-ahead from Birmingham City Council to transform the site of office accommodation at 12 Calthorpe Road.

Previously used by HSBC who relocated to Arena Central in 2018, the building is made up of two main blocks joined vertically to one another and connected by a small link block.

The hotel will be located within the smaller five-storey block, while the student accommodation will be provided in the 11-storey tower block.

As part of their planning report, Birmingham City Council  stated that “A need for the student accommodation has been demonstrated. The proposal would support the function of both the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University as key providers of employment, culture, and learning in the city”.
